Top 5 Tips to Make Your Small Living Space Decorative and Cozy

Small living spaces appeal to many but they are tricky to decorate to make aesthetic and cozy while keeping a good amount of walking space available. It can be hard to have all the elements you are wanting while prioritizing walking space and being mindful of the furniture and decor pieces. To help decorate your place, to make it look decorative and cozy, you should follow these top tips.

1-Aim to Make it Comfortable and Warm

In a small living space, the main priority should always be to make it comfortable. With the limited space, you could begin to feel contained within a tight space. That can easily be remedied by using the little space you have to make it comfortable. This can help take away from the fact that it is small and not spacious by making it a safe zone for comfort and warmth. Large interiors can be quite hard to make cozy as there is always excess space that can’t always be filled or utilized. This gives smaller living spaces the upper hand as it doesn’t take much for them to become comfortable and warm. To make your living area more comfortable and warmer, you can use fluffy items such as furry blankets or a fluffy large rug. Using these items can trap heat and increase the warmth of the room by seemingly doing nothing. They can trap warm air between the fibers and preserve the warmth. It will make your living space cozy and more enjoyable than in a large, cold space.

2-Implement Bold and Bright Colours

Colour is what directly ties with aesthetics and the appearance of the living space. No matter what living space you have, large or small, tall ceilings or short, colour is what matters as it will be one of the first things that are noticed first. There are many colour options to choose from as there are an unlimited amount of colour combinations to choose from and decide which one will be the best choice for your living space. One way to be expressive with colour is through the colour of the walls. White walls are unmatched if you are wanting to maintain as much light as possible in the room as they allow light to reflect off them. However, you would be giving up the chance to express your personality to the highest potential and you would have to be more inventive with the accessories and furniture. That can be limiting when there aren’t many choices or when it is hard to pair accessories together especially when there is limited space so choices are narrowed down further. A downside to choosing white or having lighter colour shades is that they lack creativity and easily show any marks or damage to the walls as well. Having kids and pets about can make it difficult to maintain and take care of the white walls. If you are wanting to be expressive with colour, you can try a very bold and dark-colored wall that can hide these marks and show more creativity. The walls are where you can express yourself if you can’t in the furniture or the accessories. Now colour doesn’t have to be in just the walls but can be in the accessories as well. Despite whatever colour or colours, you chose for the walls, boldness, and creativity can still be expressed in the choice of furniture and artwork. There are limitless ways to implement colour into a living room and these can all make it appear more decorative and cozier.

3-Go for Minimalist Furniture

One thing that is a requirement and not negotiable at all is furniture. All living spaces need them in order to feel like a living space. In fact, different areas of living space are defined by furniture. A dining table belongs in the kitchen or dining room; a sofa belongs in the living room; a bed belongs in the bedroom. Having furniture is simply a must. However, furniture in a small living space can be tricky as it is already tight on space. It can quickly become claustrophobic if there are too many furniture pieces in a room and the last thing you would want to do is fill the room with too much furniture so that there is no more walking or even room left to breathe. It will become a nightmare to maneuver yourself around and you might just become frustrated with having zero walking space. Regular, large, solid pieces maybe the just the furniture options you would want to consider as they do just that - they take up too much room - they take up more of the floor plan, and reduce the amount of space that is actually usable.  If you are looking to install furniture, in your small living space, but still maintain the perception of space, the advice is to look for minimalist furniture or furniture that doesn’t require much. There are beautiful furniture pieces out there that require small space but they perform the same. A good example of this is ladder bookcases as they perform the exact same as regular bookcases, they just give off the illusion of more space as they are open and are mounted to the wall. Speaking of walls, you can use the walls to store items. Simply use furniture like mounted open shelves that don’t require a whole section to themselves. If you are wanting to hide furniture from plain sight, you can have beds that can be utilized as storage. This can keep the eyes away from the clutter and have them focused on the large shaggy rug

4-Use Inventive And Smart Storage

If not hinted before, storage is a big factor when wanting to utilize space in a living area as you must be able to store your possessions but not have them take away from the little space that you have. When space is small, it makes the area seem more claustrophobic and makes it difficult to move around. This directly ties in with the minimalist furniture as there are furniture pieces out there that follow the same function but don’t use up too much space or if they do, they can count as large storage areas. As mentioned before, one of the best ways to store is to have furniture that can be utilized as storage spaces as well. Ottoman-style beds can be a good way of getting around the need for a chest of drawers or wardrobe as they have the underneath section, below the mattress, that doubles as a storage place. They can store whatever is required and anything necessary. In some situations, there can be spaces that are used for both a bedroom and a workspace as the space is too limited to have both separate. This is evident with small business owners or students, where a lot of their work can be in their ‘bedrooms’. Here you can use fold-up beds that double as sofas to reduce the need to buy the two separate items. This would allow more space for more important furniture, like a desk, that could be more necessary and beneficial.

5-Go For Sectioning Off Areas Using Decor

Sectioning off can be a great way to make the small living space seem larger than it is by allowing places to have their own designated area and treating it as if there were physical boundaries between them. The best thing about small living spaces is that you can section off using decor and aesthetics. As mentioned previously when talking about minimalist furniture, the furniture itself is a way of distinguishing different areas of the house as different pieces of furniture serve different purposes. Distinguishing doesn’t always have to be done with furniture and can rather be done using aesthetics and decor. As mentioned as well before, bold colors can be used to help liven up an area. The same can be said when separating two areas by using different color schemes or patterns. This is particularly useful if you are living in a very small living space like a student living in a dorm.  Different colors and prints can be used to separate the personal from the academics and professional.
