What is the Best Position to Place a Rug

Living rooms are the most utilized and occupied spaces in a home. All the entertainment happens there – opening presents at Christmas, guests that have come over for a visit – it is expected for that area to be at maximum comfort for it to be utilized to its full potential. A rug for your living room is important. It is vital for comfort and warmth – especially in an area that is used constantly. How the rug is positioned also matters. The orientation and the place are put in can have an effect on both the presentation of the room and the comfort. You would want the rug to be placed in a way that is best for your room and the people who use are constantly in that living space. The size of the room will determine the ideal size and best shape of the rug. The room or the living space will have to be measured before the rug is considered and bought for it to have a good chance of complimenting the room.

The general rule of thumb is that you want about 6 inches of unoccupied floor space on all sides of the rug. It centers the rug and makes it look symmetrical. However, the overall size and location of the room should also be taken into consideration and the rug should be fitted around these points; especially if the rug is being used to complement the room. Before buying a living room rug, map out your room to scale; understand the full layout and the placing of every furniture piece before adding in another. Focus on the points of interest of your space and how you want the end product to look.

 Furniture Partially on

Having furniture placed around a rug is not uncommon and is actually a very popular floor design no matter how many furniture pieces are around it. This idea is where the furniture is partially on the rug, with the furniture piece facing the rug. You can have one or all sides of the rug covered with sofas or furniture pieces. This way, the rug can connect the various furniture pieces together while extending far enough into the room to create a sense of good proportion. It can also be a good plan for when you are wanting the flooring underneath to show through. Maybe, you have detailed flooring or sturdy laminate floors that you want peeking through. Having furniture partially on the rug allows that to be possible.

Maybe you don’ want all the furniture to be on the rug and only have some. If you have more than two sitting areas, e.g., a sofa and a chair on either side, you might want the chair to be partially on the rug while the sofa remains near it, on the floor. This can be when you have the excess room you are wanting to cover up, have parts of the flooring included in the arrangement, or simply because you don’t want all edges of the rug to be covered.

All Legs on the Rug.

The rug might not be the focus of the room but rather to complement the furniture and the décor around it. Or maybe it is there to act as comfort and provide warmth every time you sit down. If that is the case, you might want to place all the furniture legs on the sofa rather than partially, like mentioned before. This allows the rug to still be a part of the décor and the whole ordeal but takes it away from acting as a focal piece. Maybe you have an open floor plan, use a large floor rug that is light or pastel and you want it to separate the living space from other areas through texture and comfort.

No Legs on the rug.

Maybe your rug is the center of the room; you are wanting it to act as the focal point and draw in attention every time someone walks in. you wouldn’t want it covered up and taken away from the size of the rug. You can place the furniture around the rug but not have any legs on it. This can show the rug off and provide a walking path to avoid using the rug as much. This arrangement is more important with rugs that have detail reaching the edges of the rug, where there are detailed borders or intricate designs. If the rug has the main design in the middle, where the edges are plain and simple or have repeated patterns, you can still consider having furniture on the rug if that is what you want.

Combine rugs.

In open floor plans, where everything is not segregated, the position of the rugs can help give separation between different compartments. If the kitchen and the living room are on the same flooring, use a large rug in the living room to separate the two. By doing this, you can allow each space to have its own vibe and give off the illusion that there is more space than there is. The difference in floor texture and comfort can definitely trick someone that they are in the living ‘room’ even though they are in an open floor plan.
