Blue Outdoor Rug

A garden rug isn't just for decoration. If you have French windows or sliding doors leading out onto your patio, a runner or rug will help trap some of the dirt from people going in and out all the time. Choose a design inspired by Mediterranean tiles in classic white and navy, which can be echoed in your selection of the best outdoor cushions, lending your patio a lovely summery feel.

Natural textures are ideal for semi-covered areas or cottage garden ideas, while recycled materials are excellent for your garden's eco credentials. Apply the same design principles as you would indoors - a striped blue rug can make a narrow patio appear wider if laid horizontally, while the stripes running away from you can lead the eye down to another area (vertically). Similarly, you can use a blue outdoor rug to tie together different elements of your garden, such as enhancing the colours in your planting.

Why not make a more permanent outdoor rug out of patterned tiles? Begin by arranging your garden furniture around a square or rectangle-shaped patterned tiled section. This creates a much more durable 'rug' because you are adding colour and pattern to the floor with tiles. To draw attention to your unique outdoor rug, you could even add a border of mosaics or plain tiles. Choose anti-slip tiles to make the area usable in all weather conditions.

Just as a blue outdoor rug can add a splash of colour to a living room, so can a neutral deck. Choose a warm yellow to complement your garden's natural lush green foliage. With a few matching cushions, planters, and a throw, your garden will look like it's been given a makeover. Grey and yellow rugs always look good together, and you can also consider them to go with your outdoor decor. For a great boho garden idea, try ochre rather than sunny yellow, which will be less punchy and more liveable. Choosing a rug design with a lot of white in it will also help.

Keep a few blue outdoor rugs rolled up for when you want to create a sunny corner on your lawn - imagine getting out of this hammock and sinking your toes into a super-soft rug. Use a pouffe or planter to weigh down your rug on either side if the breeze picks up. You don't want to be chasing it across the garden if the breeze picks up. Mix delphinium blues, lavenders, and dusky pinks with natural textures to create a palette inspired by a cottage garden. A garden rug allows you to experiment with different textures.

A cosy jute blue outdoor rug, for example, provides a great base of texture when paired with pared-back garden furniture ideas, from which you can build upwards, adding baskets, vases, cushions, and throws to enhance the relaxed look. Jute is an excellent all-natural rug material, but it does not fare well in extremely humid climates. Use on a semi-covered porch or patio if possible, and if it does get wet, place it in the sun to dry. Garden rugs do not have to be square or rectangular. With a round design, you can experiment with shape and add interest to a covered deck idea. Jute is an excellent material for creating a rustic-style space, which can be enhanced with numerous baskets and wicker planters. So choose the rug you like and get your hands on the same.
